g on the lake, our group wanted to explore how pollution affects biodiversity. During our experience, our groups found tadpoles, fish, algae, and more. Through our observations at Prospect Park Lake, we were interested in researching pollution within the lake. According to the Prospect Park Alliance, algae blooms created many issues for the lake and people in the area, stating, “These blooms have led to closing areas of the Prospect Park Lake that were previously available for dogs to swim due to concerns over exposure.” Algae blooms give the water a green color and can cause eye and skin irritation for people who come in contact with it. Since the blooms are difficult to identify, it can be challenging to know what to avoid. Additionally, “algae growth limits resources for other plant life and wildlife, which is detrimental to the health of the Park’s waterways.” Overall, algae within the Park’s lake is considered toxic so our experience at Bio Blitz sparked our idea to compare Prospect Park Lake to lakes and pollution across New York State.
