For our project, we decided to capture the essence of New York City through its sounds. We included diverse ranges of sounds in order to encapsulate the myriad of identities available. The most overt sound of the city is the subway, which garners great sentiment about the frustrations about our faulty MTA system. We’ve included the revving of sports cars. The most unique aspect of this project was when we went around Hunter’ library asking students to answer: “What reminds you of NYC” in their native language.
For our project, we tried to capture as much of New York City as possible into one audio clip. we begin with a subway announcement, the recognizable mta speakers announcing the Hunter college stop. This transitions us directly into the Hunter student body, who answer the question, “What reminds you of New York?” in their native tongues, encapsulating the diversity of the City, even within one student body. The outro consists of one long narrative answer to our question, spoken in “Long Islandese,” which we then faded into a recording of street performers in the subway station performing Riptide by Vance Joy. Our recording ends with the sounds of the NYC streets: car revving and unintelligible subway announcements about a delayed train, juxtaposed over an extended version of Riptide, spliced together with the recording of the street performance to emphasize the words “New York City.”
