Demographics

When breaking down the population of Jackson Heights, one of the first things one needs to do is look at the different races which reside in Jackson Heights and how prominent they are. Normally gender ratio is an important concept. However, Jackson Heights has a one to one gender ratio so that will not be examined. The three largest population are the Asians, the Hispanics, and the White non-Hispanic populations. In order to further break down the population, the necessity of breaking down the Asian and Hispanic populations arises.

When looking at the Hispanic population, it is easy to notice that a majority of the Hispanics are not Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban. This results from the fact that those who are categorized under ‘other’ are mainly South Americans. Their influence is made obvious by such restaurants as Cositas Ricas and multiple other existing buildings within the neighborhood.

Amongst the Asian population, there are two groups that stand out. These groups are the South Asians (denoted in the pie chart as Asian Indian) and the Chinese. The Chinese do not seem to show as much of an influence on the neighborhood. However, the South Asians have created their own little section of Jackson Heights dubbed by many as Little India.

Lastly, there are multiple remaining viewpoints from which one must look at Jackson Heights from.
