I’m sure by now you have heard of news spreading about saving this girl named Janet Liang who was diagnosed with leukemia. There is a Facebook event for it as well as a tumblr. Why is this a big deal though? The thing is, in order to find a bone marrow donor, he or she has to have similar DNA to what she has, and the chances of that are more enhanced when that donor is of the same ethnicity.

The tumblr link talks about how to help Janet and the many things that people have done for her even though they may not have met her. Her friends have done a lot to make this known to others. Some motivational words from her are mentioned there as well.

On Feburary 14, a blood drive will be held at the following universities:

University of Maryland at College Park
George Washington University
Eastern Virginia Medical School
George Mason University
University of Maryland Baltimore County

Janet has about two months left to live. I hope you become interested in this! Even if things do not work out, the fact that we are more aware about events such as this should help us to not be afraid to reach out to other people.

Update: She now has until June 2012. I really hope that she finds a donor soon.
