The House of the Dead Opera

The House of the Dead opera was the first opera I have ever seen. I have listened to opera music before and have always heard about opera but never experienced it for myself. When I think of opera I think of big people singing extremely loud. I picture those people that can hold a glass and make it break with their voices. All of this is silly and very stereotypical when it comes to opera. The House of the Dead was not what I expected to see. I am glad that it was not what I expected. I think this added to my experience.

Gerhard Richter @ Marian Goodman Gallery

The Marian Goodman Gallery of New York City is currently hosting a Gerhard Richter show with a series of oil paintings called 911. Gerhard Richter is a painter who is revolutionary in the same way that Jackson Pollack was for the arts. Pollack began using a drip and splatter technique and at the time, this had never been seen before. In the same way, when Richter unveiled his first paintings, the artistic scene was in awe. He used a technique that smudged and blurred the oil paint colors that he used on the canvas.

Tim Burton Exhbit

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA yet, but I hope I get to. (I had to do a lot of work this weekend.) I just think that Tim Burton is a great artist/director/producer with his macabre yet comical imagry and his eccentricity. Although the only movie of his I know I saw was The Nightmare Before Christmas, I do hope one day to see Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice, among other movies.
