Future of Times Square
Redeveloping Times Square: An Ever-Evolving Process
The redevelopment of Times Square is a work in progress, and is by no means completed. In the summer of 2008, the city narrowed Broadway from 42nd Street to 35th Street by two lanes, creating a bike lane and promenade with tables and flower planters. The project, called Broadway Boulevard, was met with much initial criticism, but since its creation, the site has become a popular spot for tourists and local workers to eat lunch, take in the sites, and simple relax.
A new plan is in the works for a similar promenade to be created from 47th street north towards Columbus Circle. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has plans to turn areas of Times Square into a pedestrian mall, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion in Midtown. The plan calls for Broadway to be closed to vehicular traffic from 42nd to 47th Streets, with the area between the streets to become pedestrian malls with cafe tables, chairs, and umbrellas.
Cora Cahan, president of the New 42nd Street, a nonprofit group that oversees seven historic theaters, believes that “its worth trying.” She feels that Times Square badly needs more room for pedestrians, and if this plan can create that, it would be worthwhile.
