A Deep Dive into Residential Food Waste in NYC

Have you ever thought about where the food in your garbage can ends up? Reading our poster will make you think twice before discarding the leftovers on your plate!

The production of food waste is a significant issue, as food waste makes up almost ⅓ of the total municipal solid waste in the United States. In this project, we wanted to take a look at how the amount of food waste we produce in our own households compares to the average food waste produced in NYC’s residential households. We recorded our daily food waste for three weeks and also did some outside research on food waste data and policies in NYC. We hope that after reading our poster, you will think about how the food discarded in your own household can potentially cause harm to the environment, but also about the conscious choices you can make in the future to reduce waste in general.
