Intersections in La Boheme and Rent

A look into the intersections within La Boheme and Rent regarding plot, message, and cultural meaning.

This project was made by Stephanie Gonzalez, Lucas Kulin, and Sanford James with the intent to explore the intersections between the operas of Rent and La Boheme. La Boheme is an opera set in early 19th century Paris where a group of struggling artists try to find love only for it to be stripped from them at the end. Rent is a rock opera set in late 20th century New York focusing artists trying to have impact while dealing with loss and hardship. What we found was that there were many plot similarities and quite a few theme overlaps. However, the messaging inherent within each was extraordinarily different and because of that each propagated certain values over others that were not necessarily about talked in the other.
