I have been a student at one of the cultural organizations in BIPA for 4 years. When I first entered the school, I only had one motivation: singing. However, the next 4 years have acted as two schools even though it is marketed as a single school. Along with providing a rigorous curriculum in the chosen art, it provided enriching life experiences on being a Bengali-American in NYC.
Throughout attending regular classes, performing, or being an audience in these organizations, I noticed small patterns. Like the small moments where a student wrote Bengali annotation in their paper or a traditional floor sitting arrangement in classrooms. These types of patterns are mentioned or stayed hidden. I want to treat this website almost like a journal, noting my observations and perceptions. These small details bring me closer to the answer to this question: to what extent do Bengali-Americans navigate between connecting to a culture and adapting to American society?
