Our professor encouraged us to choose this topic, as his research is focused on biotechnology and the lotus plant. We found the plant very interesting the more we researched, and discovered the benefits it has medicinally and technologically. 80% of all medicines come from plants/nature, and only 5% of the known plants are used for that 80% of medicines. The takeaway from our project is that if this extensive list of benefits comes from only one plant, natural remedies and biotechnology seem extremely promising for the future of medicine and biology.

Hello student researchers!
Congrats on developing a very interesting project and sharing quite a bit of fascinating information about the lotus flower. You’ve all created an increased interest in lotus flowers for me! I enjoyed that you all took an approach that included a variety of ways in which the Lotus flower stands out, from its antioxidant properties to its potential in the field of material science, its intense hydrophobicity … and sleep research etc. I hope all or some of you will be continuing this research in some capacity because I’m an incredibly curious about how the antioxidants in the edible parts of the flowers anatomy compare to other known and marketed antioxidant food sources, like pomegranate seeds. Great job!
Warmly,
Dr. B
