Nature in Human Spaces

Our project is about the connection between humans and nature and how it is depicted in art. We chose this topic because during our first Macaulay Seminar Class, we learned about the aesthetic philosophy of Immanuel Kant on the sublime(beauty). We learned that he believed that beauty does not exist in the object, rather by the way a subject perceives it. In a big city like NYC, nature is a way that artists and individuals perceive beauty. During our trips to museums and tours of public art, we saw several different perspectives of natural landscapes from artists from different times and we decided to look into the different ways that nature was perceived. We also included the way that humans are damaging nature, providing artistic examples of urbanization, deforestation, pollution, and smoking. Lastly, we included how humans sought to preserve nature by creating artificial landscapes or stopping a natural landscape in time through art.
