Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre

The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre or UCB Theatre for short, is an off-off-Broadway Theatre (which means that it seats less than one hundred people). The UCB Theatre is opened in two places, one in New York City at 307 West 26th Street, and one in Los Angeles at 5919 Franklin Avenue. According to UCB Theatre’s Website, UCB Theatre was started when Upright Citizens Brigade, which consisted of Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh, came to New York City (our big shiny red apple) in 1996. On February 4, 1999 the first UCB Theatre was opened at 161 West 22nd Street, New York City, on the site of what use to be a strip club. On April 1, 2003 UCB Theatre was moved to where it is currently now, at 307 West 26th Street. A little more than two years later UCB opened a second theater in Los Angeles, California and on March 1st 2006 UCB opened its first Improv Training Center at 145 W 30th Street.

UCB’s Mission is:

“The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre is dedicated to fostering both an appreciation and education of the arts through affordable and high quality comedic performances and classes.” – http://www.ucbtheatre.com/about/

Now it has alumni almost everywhere. Many perform on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and even The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

UCB Theatre provides cheap shows for 5 or 10 dollars a ticket, and there is absolutely no drink minimums. (Which is great if you are under the drinking age, because that means you don’t have to by $2.50 water.) UCB Theatre also allows people to reserve tickets online for any show, and pick them up on site. UCB Theatre is also known to have surprising guest comedians (Robin Williams, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and John Oliver, just to name a few).
