The co-creators of this honors thesis are:

Sam Landau

Sam is a sophomore Macaulay Honors Student at Brooklyn College. Sam is no stranger to the borough as he’s lived there for the past 19 years (his entire life). Sam intends on majoring in finance and economics and on pursuing a legal degree. Sam is involved in a group project involving New York City Parks which he loves among other things. His main duty is as editor of the PSA.

Kate McQuater

Kate is a member of the Macaulay Honors College Class of 2013 (Brooklyn) enrolled in Seminar 3 from September-December 2010. She hails from Michigan and is a Creative Writing Major. This project has been a real “eye opener” to the beautiful parks around New York City. Now, more than ever, she wonders: why do I have to take a ride on the MTA just to go to a park and read a book? Kate is the full-time editor and engineer of the website portion of this Seminar Thesis, as well as the wrangler the group’s piece-by-piece research.

Lilach Gez

Lilach Gez is a highly motivated Macaulay student, currently a sophomore at Brooklyn College. She is aspiring to becoming an Audiologist and her present major is Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology and Hearing. She know it’s a mouthful, but it is in Brooklyn College’s renowned Department. She really enjoyed working on this project because it gave her a sense of how important our parks are. A park is an integral portion of living in the city, since it is probably the only green space we get. Lilach is a contributing member to this group and thought of the idea for our group’s PSA video.

Deborah Richardson

Deborah is a Political Science major and Small Business Management minor. Deborah was under the misconception that parks are inherently sustainable, but boy was she wrong! She tends not to be surprised at the injustice of the world anymore, yet she is optimistic and hopes to change the future. Deborah’s chief duty in this group has been the scientific poster, that is when she wasn’t wading through the group’s heaps of emails.

Mahee Islam

Mahee is a charismatic Macaulay Honors sophomore at Brooklyn College. His major area of study is Philosophy, with an intended minor in Psychology (specifically, Cognitive Science). He is in the pre-medicine track, aspiring to a physician one day. Mahee has been taking the 3rd honors seminar “Environmental Science and Technology of NYC” during the fall 2010 semester. Mahee’s most significant experience with parks comes from his childhood days spending leisure time with his family at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. He was not always aware of sustainability issues with New York City parks, however he has gained a copious amount of knowledge during the process of this project. His contributions to the project can be seen in the research for Highbridge Park on the website and the poster, and he is the host of the group PSA. One of Mahee’s personal philosophies is to persevere with guarded optimism and full enjoyment in one’s life, no matter how much worse or better one’s situation could be.

Hifza Mahmood

Hifza is a 2nd year Brooklyn Macaulay student who vividly remembers going to parks nearly every weekend as a child. However before she participated in the project, she never really gave much thought to park funding or function. Working on this project caused her to look at parks differently as she now knows that they aren’t just places of recreation but an important part of the community  One of her contributions to the project was helping to conduct the Highline park interviews.
