It’s a great idea to add captions to your images. Captions might be descriptive, and/or they might include bibliographic information that cites the source of the image.
To add captions to images uploaded to the Media Library is very simple. Captions can be added upon upload, or when added into the post. Here is a video and easy-to-follow instructions from WPBeginner.com.
You can also add captions to embedded images/videos that are hosted on other sites (ex. YouTube, Flickr, etc.), by adding a caption shortcode (i.e. information formatted in a specific way within square brackets []) around the embedded content.
You can do this in either the Visual or Text editor, though it is often easiest to do in the Text editor.
Below is the shortcode you should enter. The portions in aqua can be adjusted, depending on the caption text you wish to enter, the URL of the image/video to be embedded, and the width (you may need to play around with this one).
