How to Add a Category or a Tag:

Category: After you finish entering the content of your post, select the appropriate category from the list of categories located on the right hand side of the page. Publish the post!

Tag: After you finish entering the content of your post, add appropriate tags either by selecting from the list of most used tags (found on the right hand side of the page), or by adding one of your own. Publish the post!

**Categories are very important for organizing your posts and making sure they appear. As you’ll see on the home page of our course site, there are multiple pages (for instance “identity posts” located under “contributions”.) In order for your post to appear on the appropriate page, you have to categorize it according to where you want it to appear — so, for example, if I were writing my identity post I would tag it as “identity post” and it would appear in the right spot.

Terminology – Category vs. Tag:
Both categories and tags are used to help organize posts and group related information. But the function a bit differently. Categories are broad topical groupings used to keep related posts organized. Tags are more specific terms that can describe the post. Categories can be arranged in a hierarchy, whereas tags function independently of other tags or categories.

For example: A post on a food blog for a recipe for arroz con leche (rice pudding) might be listed under the category of “Dessert” and the sub-category of “Pudding.” But it might also be tagged with terms such as, “rice,” “creamy,” and “cinnamon.” In the category of “Pudding,” other recipes for desserts such as chocolate pudding, vanilla pudding, and bread pudding might be found. But the tag of “rice” would group together those recipes in which rice was a main ingredient, including non-dessert items, such as vegetable fried rice, arroz con pollo, and risotto.

Do I need to use categories and tags?
You should add a category to your post to make sure it appears in the appropriate location in the eportfolio. Tags are optional, but can facilitate locating related posts.
