Raptors such as hawks and falcons are capable of surviving well in urban environments, including urban parks. But, some urban parks are likely to yield greater numbers of hawks and falcons than others, and we wanted to find out which ones and why.

we would like to find out whether tree diversity is similar across a subset of four neighborhoods in Brooklyn which differ significantly with regard to the median household income of the residents therein. This is important because trees provide crucial ecosystem services such as filtering air particles and keeping streets cool (Willis and Petrokofsky, 2017). We are interested in exploring the relationship between median household income and tree diversity because tree diversity is important to neighborhood health and quality of life.

The project explores the impact of American Pokeweed on biodiversity in NYC parks, focusing on Central Park and Prospect Park. The team was intrigued by the abundance of this plant in Prospect Park and sought to understand its effects on local ecosystems.

For birds that live in the city, you would think more about pigeons and sparrows than you would hawks and falcons, but these raptors are surprisingly adaptable, and have established healthy populations in New York City, especially urban parks. What is it that allows them to survive? Which parks are the best for sustaining healthy numbers of hawks and falcons?
Living in New York City can be overwhelming, so we wanted to see how exposure to green spaces, whether it be the big parks or small hidden gems, effected people’s stress levels and mental health.

Our project focuses on the connection between nature and humans and how it is depicted through art by featuring how nature is depicted through art using Kant’s aesthetic philosophy, the harm humans conduct to nature, and how nature is preserved by humans.
Our findings suggest that a reduction in human interaction with other organisms, even those that have evolved to live alongside humans, may allow those organisms to better thrive.

Located in Brooklyn, New York, Prospect Park spans 526 acres. We examined four of the most invasive plant species and the affected native species in Prospect Park. We focused on each plant’s role and how the ecosystem is affected from the prevalence of invasive plant species. We also analyzed an in-progress solution issued by Prospect Park in recent years to target these invasive species.
