Here is the current (11/2/20) species and observation lists for the 2020 Macaulay Honors College Remote BioBlitz: 2020 Remote BioBlitz Data 11_2_20 . We are still at just under 40% of these observations being classified by iNaturalist as “Research Grade” (2/3 of the identifiers agree on the species), so the species lists are going to change over time. The first sheet is a summary page with our species count (currently at 375 species!) which is likely to increase as the iNaturalist community helps to add species identifications. We have only counted Research Grade observations that made it all the way to the species level in this summary. If you go to the iNaturalist project page, you will note that the species counts are higher because they are including taxa that are unique in the data set but at a more inclusive level. For example, if we had an observation of some oak tree identified at the genus level (Quercus) and there were no other Quercus observations, then this counts in the project as a species even though it doesn’t have a species level ID.

The file above also contains definitions for each column in the workbook and then two worksheets with data. One with just the Research Grade observations and one with all of the observations regardless of status. Again, because of the dynamic nature of the iNaturalist community, there are species IDs constantly being added. We highly recommend that you download a more current data set for yourself if you intend to use these data for class.

Here are the links for the 2020 Remote BioBlitz projects on iNaturalist. We had separate projects for students and staff/taxon leaders. You can look at the observations for each project individually or al together in the umbrella project:

      1. Student data collection project
      2. Parallel staff/faculty/VTL project
      3. Umbrella project (combines the two above)

To download the current data for each project, go to “Observations” and then click “Export” on the right side of the page. This will take you to the Export page where you can choose the columns you want in your data set and also further refine the observations included. It takes about 5 minutes to download the BioBlitz data set, but it could take longer depending on how busy the servers are.

If you want to compare the 2020 results to other BioBlitz years, you can access the data from those years here: https://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/bioblitz/category/data/
