Hi everyone,

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is your first required common event of the semester, Macaulay’s Night at the Museum! Here are the quick details:

  • When: Monday Sept. 18, 5-7:30pm
    • Don’t be late! If you arrive after 5, you’ll have to wait an hour to get in
  • Where: Brooklyn Museum
    • Take the 2/3 to Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum stop (closest stop); other nearby stops are the 4/5 to Franklin Ave., or the B/Q to 7th Ave.
  • What: Night at the Museum is an annual event where the Museum is closed to the public and open just for Macaulay students! All your fellow first-year MHC students from all eight campuses will be there. You’ll be having conversations about art with your classmates and recording those conversations on your phones, along with taking photos or videos of the art.

Please bring your fully charged smart phone to take photos and/or videos of the art, as well as to record voice memos. There will be an orientation at the museum tomorrow, but the basic idea is that you should break into groups and have conversations similar to those we did on IDEA day (the day you got your computers) about the art. In our class, we will be using the photos and voice memos to make videos later in class.

FAQ

  • What if I have class during Night at the Museum?
    • If you have class, you should go to class. Please email Jake and Prof. Hoffman to let us know.
  • What if I get there late?
    • Leave early enough that the MTA can break down for 20 minutes and you’ll still be there by 5! If you are late, there will be a second group starting at 6 but you won’t get as much time in the museum.
  • Can I walk around the museum and do the voice memos/photos with people in another class?
    • Absolutely. Just make sure that you share the photos and recordings among the people in your group so that you have a copy of them.
  • Is it better to be in a group with people from our class?
    • It might make things a bit easier later…
  • What will we be doing with this stuff later?
    • We’re still working out the specifics, but you’ll be editing together a short video using the photos and recordings in the model of the SmARTHistory videos like this one. This will serve as practice for a later assignment in our course.

See you all tomorrow!
