Vaccines and Autism

The MMR vaccine is given to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. The vaccine is given between 12-15 months of age, and is the safest and most reliable way to protect yourself from these potentially life threatening illnesses.

In 1998, the incorrect idea that the MMR vaccine caused autism was propagated by Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Autism is a broad spectrum developmental disorder in which the stronger symptoms typically express themselves at the age when the MMR vaccine is given.

The media latched onto these findings and spread them like wildfire. Despite the fact that the scientific community has refuted Wakefield’s claims, out of fear, some parents still refuse vaccinations.
