Pre-Diabetes and Prevention | Queens College Health Fair
You probably have a sense of how grave an issue diabetes has become for Americans. The seventh leading cause of death in the U.S, diabetes currently affects about 25.8 million people, and of these individuals, 90 to 95% have type 2 diabetes (National Diabetes Fact Sheet).
This amounts to approximately 8% of the entire U.S. population having type 2 diabetes!
It’s not all bad news, however. The good news is that wise lifestyle choices can help one to avoid or significantly reduce the risk of acquiring the disease. Fortunately, even the individuals who are flagged as “potential diabetics” need not develop the disease if extra caution is exerted. These individuals who find themselves somewhere in the middle of being classified as “normal” and as “diabetic” are known to be pre-diabetic and the state that they are in is known as pre-diabetes. Let’s explore pre-diabetes in greater detail.
