NYC celebrates Caribbean culture with Carnival.

This is a video taken by a journalist from the New York Post, displaying a few fun and enjoyable moments of the 42nd Carnival celebration in Eastern Parkway. Participants wear traditional clothes, listen to music, sing and dance with their full capacities. The great festival attracts thousands of people and even the police join in to celebrate. The video also includes comments from Caribbean individuals who express their opinions on Carnival. One of them said that regardless of the economy’s position and despite any bad conditions, the West Indian people love to enjoy and celebrate. It also mentions that side parties take place and offer traditional foods. The video is noteworthy because it shows how New York residents of Caribbean origins do not cut their ties from home. Instead, they maintain these transnational ties by practicing their culture in their new homes. Jessie Thisell (2005) mentions in the article, “The 16th Annual Phagwah Parade: An Expression of Indo-Caribbean Identity in New York City,” that such celebrations display culture in the music, clothing and the artistic elements of the festival. This exposes the younger generations to their culture that they might not have seen back home, which establishes their identities as Caribbean.
