"This article points out an important point about economic inequality in America; it is something that has occurred due to our decisions, not something that has happened to us. But it made me think, where would the idea of blame avoiding have even come from? I think it’s important to note the role of mainstream media, some of which that are controlled by these same higher power billionaires, have in the perpetuation of this falsehood. When our media and democratic system are owned by the same wealthy few and the allocation of money is considered free speech, is it really any surprise that our policies and national conversation demonize those who we should be trying to help."

"It’s interesting that the ethnic groups as defined in this article (the Irish, Italians, and Jews) which dominated crime rings in the United States, ended up being in charge of some of the institutions which they fought against as “gangsters”. The author contends that for groups that could not pursue the American dream through hard work and perseverance through the established institutions, these groups then simply “innovated”. And while discrimination against these groups is historical fact, it’s ironic that, for example, the Irish went from running established crime rings to running the police department."

"I was actually surprised to typically centerist Hillary come out in favor of very liberal immigration policies, however like the piece notes, a photo op and some promises don't mean very much in the scheme of things. I would try and be optimistic about Hillary intentions (that it isn't simply about drawing in the key Latino voting block), but that just seems a bit naive."

"Even though on the surface the ID cards seem like an efficient way for undocumented people to navigate day to day life and the paperwork of governmental programs, I'm worried about the actual feasibility of registering undocumented people for this. For example, with the last census, President Obama started an initiative to make undocumented citizens feel as if they could register with the census without fear of deportation, which sounds efficient right? If the census has a more accurate depiction of neighborhood's populations and demographics, the government will be able to aptly respond to their specific needs and issues. However, despite a large media campaign, undocumented citizens still felt that this census initiative was aimed at finding the large, undocumented populations and deporting them. Using this as a point of comparison with the new ID cards, I'm worried that the groups it's targeted at will not feel safe enough to register with the city, making the new initiative more about aesthetic than function."
