The economic development of the surrounding Coney Island Creek and Coney Island Beach areas has greatly impacted its water quality over the years. Coney Beach’s position as a tourist destination and economic post has afforded the area with constant cleaning efforts and water monitoring imparted by the EPA and DEP. On the other hand, the industrial developments surrounding Coney Island Creek currently and during its development means that addressing water quality and pollution has not been a priority for the city (even though it is for nearby residents).
