Our focus for the STEAM festival project is on thrifting and sustainable fashion in New York City. Over the past few years, thrifting has risen in popularity especially with social media. With the rise of thrifting, conversation surrounding its effects on the environment and lower-income communities reflects the concerns of the younger generation. New York City has always been a hotspot for thrift stores, whether it may be vintage stores, consignment shops, or flea markets, because of the city’s intense fashion culture. For this project, we plan on diving deeper into the popularization and various effects of thrifting. We will start with a brief overview of different aspects of fashion in New York, then delve deeper by introducing a focus on thrift shopping. Another idea we had was to go thrifting ourselves and pick out pieces to showcase the amount of money you would be saving by thrifting.
