Art is perspective. The definition of art cannot and will never be limited to one statement. Parallel to the definition, or lack thereof, art can be anything and cannot be limited to one form, object, idea, or meaning. We are art and art is us– the definition of art is up to each and every one of us. This concept alone makes everyone a piece of art.
Art is comprehensive. Music, paintings, architecture, sports, movies, language, and much more. Whether we like it or not, every single thing is an art form. The interpretation of art differs from person to person, and the emotions we associate with art also vary. Nevertheless, we are brought together by our enjoyment for art, regardless of which kind of art it is. It is one of the reasons why we love America, a governing system that gives the people the freedom to be creative and to express that creativity.
Everyone went to an exhibition, a play, an opera, and a dance performance, but no one had the same review of it. Some were shocked, displeased, appreciative, or excited. Some performances were draining, others revitalizing. Everyone had a different experience, though we all had the same catalyst. This is a small portion of how we see art everyday. On the street, in a home, or on the subway, art approaches us just as often as we approach it; And our range of reactions are as diverse as our range of experiences.
Just as we placed ourselves in each location, we also put a little bit of ourselves in our reactions. Given the choice to visit any art in New York City, we specifically chose those shown in the video for a purpose. Our reactions were reflective of our personalities and our inner thoughts. With no sound, we can only say so much. Art is reflected in all of us.
So then how do we define art? According to our beloved IDC class…
Art is enticing.
Art is confusing.
Art is passion.
Art is something that makes you feel a certain way.
Art is complex.
Art is mmmmmMMMmmmmmm.
Art is infinitely boundless; yet we are the borders of art.
Art is interpretive.
Art is infinite.
Art is perfectly flawed.
Art is a journey that we unintentionally take.
Art is independent, ambiguous expression of emotion and values that resonates across countries, cultures, and languages.
Art is what you deem it to be.
Art is full of expression.
Art is everything and anything.
Art is unique and insightful.
Art is personal.
Art is speaking without words.
Art is beautiful.
Art is too subjective for tastes.
Art is confusing. Art is everything, therefore, art is nothing.
Art is expression of the soul.
Art is something I need, it’s like breathing. And every day I look for some sign of art in my life.
Art is forever, as it will always be unique and independent. Art is truly a timeless masterpiece– we as people breathe it, walk it, view it, move to it, hear it, smell it, taste it, feel it, and ultimately, live it. Art is…
Your video project did well to capture art’s many faces. This class exposed us to a wide variety of art as to broaden our horizons and change the way we view the world. Your video brought us to several well known pieces of art in the city and showed us your individual reactions to them. As we discussed several times there is no universal reaction or purposed to art. Art can be purely aesthetic or it can be provocative. It can tell a story or be abstract. As such, there is no uniform definition for what is art and what isn’t, which your project captures very well. I particularly liked the quotes on the bottom of the manifesto as they drew the audience into the work itself.
I really love how you guys directed this whole film to portray your idea. When I saw the first cuts of this film, I remember thinking how the beginning was a bit perplexing, because I couldn’t really tell who the subject was (at first I thought it was one person, then I slowly realized it was multiple shots of different people). It really established the idea that art exists, but that there are many types of viewers who appreciate art in their own ways. I also found it very creative that you guys used not only your group members’ reactions to art, but that you guys incorporated the opinions of the rest of the class, which really helped show that your idea isn’t limited to this project, and that it extends into our lives everyday. Very creative work!!!
I really like how you incorporated our class discussions into your project. I agree that while many of us have similar routines, we see art as well as almost everything else, differently. Also, the way you filmed the video clearly displayed your ideas. I love how at the beginning, we do not see anyone’s face since the morning routine is very similar for everyone. In the end, I loved how you incorporated recordings of what our classmates thought of art.
I just want to start off saying the funniest part was the repetition of “Art is… MmmmmmMMMmmmmm.” I felt that the video was very powerful, it truly showed the influence this class had on our perception on art. Each individuals view on the arts was indeed unique. Some were enthralled by its greatness, others felt emotion beyond comprehension and cried, some laughed at memes, some were nonchalant and just didn’t care, and some took it as a part of their lives and enjoyment. This video shows our own freedom to take art into whatever we desire in our hearts. Great work guys.
I love the idea behind this video. “What is art?” is the first question we heard in this class, and now that we have had a semester of experiences our views may have changed. Although I am still not sure how to define art, I like that you included a recording of our voices. I also love the different visual reactions shown. It helps us see that we are all different and we all have different perspectives on the world. I think you portrayed art as something that is left up to interpretation due to the fact that it cannot have just one definition in a way easy to comprehend.
I think you did a great job. First, we are taken through every person’s daily routine, which happens to be almost all the same. It sets each person up as if we are all alike. But art is unique. Art brings out the individualism inside people. Your video and its message shows that art and creativity is personal. I also loved how you incorporated our voices and opinions in your video – great touch! It makes it relatable to us as students. Overall well done.
