Green Notes

The balancing of passion and practically is quintessentially the key to finding personal satisfaction. Achieving this should be the personal mission for every individual in the course of his quest for identifying life’s meaning. It is concerning and altogether heartbreaking that many, if not most, individuals over complicate this simplistic and joyous system of philosophical thought. Perhaps, we are not the first to acknowledge this but regardless it is a matter of the highest importance.

Passion versus practicality is a timeless human struggle. Webster’s Dictionary defines passion as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something, and defines practicality as likely to succeed and reasonable to do or use. In life’s journey, we are repeatedly faced with the choice between doing what we believe is enjoyable and meaningful and accomplishing what we believe is responsible or viable. This is evident whether it be career choices, as we portray in our short film, or the core beliefs and values that we hold dear to our hearts. The common stigma is that in life when a man choses passion over practicality, he finds himself financially deficient. On the other hand, when a man choses practicality over passion he finds himself devoting his life to an occupation that he loathes.

The problem is that reason and passion are not mutually exclusive. We find true clarity, conviction, meaning, and happiness when these two elements overlap. A man cannot limit himself to one or the other. It is never too late to reevaluate the path of life that he chooses. If he chooses perceived passion over practicality, then he should find a way to make what he loves economically viable to help sustain himself. If he chooses perceived practicality over passion, then he should find a way to make their life choices fulfilling.

The idealist in one’s self wishes to live free and follow what the heart desires; while, the clear benefits of practicality can often burn holes in this vision while shining brighter on another, less attractive path. The great news is that, by blending what you love with what you can make materialistic gain off of, you find the best compromise is no compromise at all: find both in one.

Our work begs questioning on the choices we make when pursuing a career, and whether the things we enjoy on the side should solely be just that. As you watch our short film, our work will provide insight to evaluate the future choices that you plan on making as you go through your journey of life. Be prudent in your decision making and make choices out of rational discourse. However, at the same time, remember to leave room for your warm spirit to run wild and pursue what you enjoy.

I love this video! First of all, it’s so refreshing and funny rather than the usual cliche Hollywood storyline. I like how Chris showcases how art can sometimes drive people crazy. Practicality and passion are not always closely tied together; people make tough decisions when it comes to what they want to do and what others think they should do. Such decisions cause frustration, which is clearly demonstrated in the video. Overall, great job guys!

Great job on this project guys. I liked this whole concept because it’s actually a common issue or theme many would relate to – deciding what you want to grow up as and deciding whether you want to pursue a career that is financially stable or a career that you utterly enjoy. I especially liked that the project comes full circle in a way. In the beginning, Brendan and Chris were playing in their “band”, and even though they lived separate lives after splitting up, in the end they were playing together.

I love the scenes that you guys added to your video, it really enhanced my understanding of it!! Also, you guys made really good use of film angles (like with the different angles of when you guys played the instruments) and cool edits (like the subtle “cha-ching” sound in the background while they hand shook at Credit Suisse). The split- screen effect was incredibly useful in understanding and comparing the different ways a person can proceed with their life…by being driven through by their true passion or by financial motives. The video really highlights a major problem that I’m sure many people face during their lifetime. Great job!!!

I just want to start off saying the funniest part was the repetition of “Art is… MmmmmmMMMmmmmm.” I felt that the video was very powerful, it truly showed the influence this class had on our perception on art. Each individuals view on the arts was indeed unique. Some were enthralled by its greatness, others felt emotion beyond comprehension and cried, some laughed at memes, some were nonchalant and just didn’t care, and some took it as a part of their lives and enjoyment. This video shows our own freedom to take art into whatever we desire in our hearts. Great work guys.

Especially as college students, I feel as though trying to find the compromise between passion and practicality is one of the challenges that we struggle with the most. At genesis of our adult careers, finding a niche in which we can spend the rest of our lives in is a ridiculously troublesome task that many of us are striving for. Some choose complete practicality, but I agree with your group in that it’s not fulfilling devote one’s self into something simply for the sake of practicality. But it’s not sufficient to pursue passion when there’s no food on the table. But finding the happy median, where we can both enjoy our passions while sustaining ourselves with the benefits of practicality, is more possible than most people think. And I enjoyed how you brought this up through your final project.

I like how your video explores a key dilemma many people face: the choice between following your dreams and passion or following the most logical or practical path. Even though Brandon left the band and went on to college to work in business, it was nice how he came back to play with Chris one last time.
The camera shots you used in your video were really great. I like how the bar scene was filmed above the main characters and how some of the drumming scenes had close ups of the drum sticks and drums themselves. The varying camera shots added depth and perspective to the video, which was made the video more interesting to watch.
