Based on our visit to the exhibition Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you will choose one (1) Sargent portrait to reimagine three (3) different ways from your contemporary perspective. Sargent, in one sense, captured his social milieu in these portraits of artists and friends. We see them at leisure, we see them at home, we see their families and occupations. How can you transform Sargent’s artwork into a contemporary style and visual idiom that reflects your social environment? Think of this project as being in conversation with an artist and his work. The creative problem you need to solve is to bridge the past with the present so that your 3 versions of a portrait both connect and depart from Sargent’s work.
