- I was very much interested in the new trends of geographic placement of high immigrant populations. I never thought that immigrants would be moving to the Midwestern states because I for some had never considered that there would be job opportunities enough to support large influxes of immigrant populations. Looking at Table 1, the most surprising countries that immigrants are coming from (for me at least) are the United Kingdom and Germany. Now several effects of this immigrant migration to previously low-immigrant areas are mentioned in the article, but how would these affect the rate of assimilation of these immigrants?
- Would it be more reasonable to assume that still the best long-term pathway into assimilation is through established immigrant gateways (because of access to resources and whatnot) or would the inherently greater rates of interaction between native Americans and immigrants be more helpful?
