2. Major Areas of Origin within Mexico

Top 3 States sending Immigrants to the US (2000)

Net flow of immigration was -4 per 1000 in 2010, which means that more people are leaving Mexico than are being brought into it. The majority of immigrants are fmor the rural areas of Mexico that experience the most economic hardship. Of the immigrants that leave Mexico in recent years, the majority are men of working age.

Once the migrants cross, the majority land into “traditional” areas of Mexican immigrant settlement, such as the South, California, Chicago and the New York City Metropolitan Area. Numbers for the states of origin in specific US cities could be misleading as many Mexican migrants are afraid to admit they are immigrants and refuse to give personal information. However, the estimated amount of foreign-born Mexicans living and working in the NYC area was estimated in 2010 to be at about 190,000 and the fastest growing ethnic population within the city (Source: Columbia.edu).
