Final Paper – Food Site Review

For your final paper, choose a New York City food site (restaurant, market, pushcart, street vendor, etc.) to visit and analyze in a 3-5 page paper (typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point font).  Your food site can be in any neighborhood, as long as it’s in New York City (it doesn’t have to be in your group neighborhood, although it can be if you’d like).

This paper will be different from your food site analyses in your wiki.  It should include a brief (up to one page) description of the food site itself, its location, history, and role in the neighborhood.  The remainder of the paper should analyze the food site in relation to TWO of the course themes from our syllabus (family and neighborhood / commerce and industry /  work / ethnic identity / fusions / assimilation and Americanization / social class and neighborhood change (gentrification).   Consider how the site fits into the conversation we’ve been having over the course of the semester about food, community, and the peopling of New York City.

Sources / citation

You should make reference in your analysis to at least two of our course readings.  If you cite or quote from the course readings you can just use a parenthetical reference with the author and page number (eg Diner, p. 10).  If you cite from a chapter of Gastropolis, use the name of the chapter author, not the book editors.  If you cite or quote from outside sources, you should provide full citation information in either Chicago or MLA style.

Submitting your paper

This paper is due by 5 pm on Friday May 21.  You should submit your paper to me by email.  Be sure that you receive a confirmation from me that I received your email.  If I do not send the confirmation, it means I didn’t receive your paper and you will not receive credit for it.  It is your responsibility to ensure that I receive your paper.
