Everything Within a Block (73rd St and 37th Ave)

DTNY is just one of the many stores in Bangladesh Plaza

Jackson Heights is known as the most diverse neighborhood in America, and accordingly it’s no surprise to find everything you need there (Jackson, par. 1; Miyares 462).  For new Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi American immigrants in particular, everything they need is essentially in Jackson Heights. Clothing stores, groceries, restaurants, medical offices, tutorial centers, law agencies, travel agencies, bars, banks, and whatever else you can think of—It’s there. This becomes plainly apparent when looking at the different facilities in the neighborhood. In fact, going though a single block in Jackson Heights will suffice to prove this point.

Each block in the neighborhood has many types of facilities, and this also applies to 73rd street from Broadway to 37th Ave. At the intersection of 73rd street and Broadway is Astoria Federal bank, one of the four banks (others being Chase, City, and TD Bank) within a two-block radius. After the bank is a T-Mobile and appliances store. Opposite the bank is Kabab King

This building alone houses more than 15 facilities.

Dinar, serving Indian food, with parties and large arrangement held on the second floor. Seconds away, after passing two apartment complexes on both sides, is Aladdin Sweetmeat, a restaurant serving traditional Bangladeshi food. Dhaka Biriyaani House is the third restaurant on this block, and it too serves Bangladeshi/Indian food. Next door to it is Haat Baazaar, one of three grocery and meat stores on this block. Then comes Bangladesh Plaza, a building complex that houses DTNY Fashion and many small service stores. DTNY, a twist on the American name brand DKNY, has a fusion of Bangladeshi and Indian clothing and accessories.

For the one who is in the mood to drink and play pool, there is Penny Ready Inn, a 40 year-old Irish bar with friendly bartenders and good prices (Simonson, pars. 2-4). Next to the bar, on the corner of 73rd street and 37th Ave, is a pizzeria

and deli. The baked goods are of surprisingly good taste and fresh quality. Opposite the pizzeria is Shabzi Mandi. Similar to the well-known Patel Brothers grocery, which is just a block away, Shabzi Mandi too has those “hard-to-find homeland products” for South Asians (Lee, par. 7). From touring though 73rd street, it is evident that Jackson Heights is truly remarkable not only for its diversity of cultures, but also in the way it has so many facilities within even a single block.

Have a look for yourself. Tour through the block, and the neighborhood if you’d like, using Google Map’s street view.
