Hello Brandon, I think that you captured the pose of Carlos-Duran very well. I applaud your attempt to recreate the exasperated look on his face. I interpret the gradual darkening of the background in your edits as a tool to help the viewer focus on you rather than the background. The mustache and beard is a good look for you.
I really liked your variations of the original painting. In particular, I liked your second variation with a galaxy background. It is a much more modern take on the original. In the original, the background is a nondescript color so much of the focus is emphasized on the man in the portrait. In your variations, the backgrounds are much more alive and engaging.
