Last Thursday, September 8th, I had the chance of attending an event that truly makes NYC what it is. Fashion’s Night Out is a city-wide occasion where stores stay open way past their usual hours, each hosting their own “parties” equipped with DJ’s, artists, and of course runway shows. Caught in the middle of all the hustle and bustle, I couldn’t help but notice as I walked from store to store that the real art wasn’t on the shelves or in the windows, it was walking next to me. The people around me were all interested in fashion, like I am, but fashion meant something different to each and every one of them. In front of me was a woman in an extravagant ball gown, behind me a man in heels, next to me someone with a hat made of feathers. That night, fashion was an art form, and everywhere I turned, it was being honored as just that.

I went to the same event and I totally agree with you. The buzz and excitement that night was just incredible. It was not the normal shopping experience. People seemed to know that it was Fashion Night Out and wanted to experience it to the fullest. People would randomly scream on the streets, take pictures, and drag around heavy shopping bags as souvenirs of their experience. People were gathered together to celebrate fashion as an art form. Personally, I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. However, I still felt very much a part of the event. This is an experience definitely worth repeating next year.

I’ve always wanted to go to this and have heard so much about it. Thanks for writing about it, now I know what it is like! I think I will go next year. This is a very unique type of art and Fashion’s Night Out is really the time for them to display it. It must have been interesting and really fun to see all the different types of people that went to this event. Hope you had fun!
I couldn’t agree more. Fashions Night Out was an event that shows how amazing this city really is. New York City is known around the world for its art, but it is more recognized for the MoMa, Met, and Guggenheim. It is often that New York’s fashion industry is overlooked or under appreciated. Even though other cities also partook in Fashions Night Out, none of these events could have displayed the diversity that is present in this city. I especially like your mention that the art was not so much in the windows, but was actually all around you.
