Don’t let the flies buzz

I’ve just seen “The Flies” written by Jean – Paul Sartre. What a great play must I say!

The plot is set up in Argos (Greece). The main character, Orestes, the son of the  king, long ago killed by Aegisthus, returns to the city with his tutor to avenge the death of his father.. He returns to the city drowning in flies, the great creatures of Zeus, that are as prosperous as sins of the very comrades-residents of the city. Ruled by a murderer, and hated by the daughter of the killed king (Electra) and Orestes’ sister, the city is pretty much looks like hell on the Earth. Continue reading

To go or not to go

“The Sonnet Man” is the idea I hated, but I went there anyway.

The guy, Devon Glover, hip-hops Shakespeare’s sonnets – the nightmare of a teacher of Literature. But in fact, he is a teacher himself. So why does he do that?

Firstly, it’s A/art. It’s a performance. He isn’t just rapping the sonnets. He also writes the “explanation” songs, which can help to understand what Shakespeare was talking about. Secondly… it’s an attempt to finally make more people interested in William Shakespeare’s works.

I love to criticize. But after seeing “The Sonnet Man” and  seeing how passionate he is about what he’s doing… it’s hard to say something against it. After all, would somebody even bother saying anything if he was reading Shakespeare “on” the classical music”? I doubt that. So, while I’m not completely freed of my scepticism, I must admit – I enjoyed it. That’s exactly why it would be worthwhile to learn more about him (and then see the performance for yourself!):

I love cocoa, but I am not allowed to drink it. So I felt very disturbed by this fact, when an actress asked if someone wants some. But the rest of the “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind” wasn’t so distracting, if one doesn’t mind the fact that public shouted “curtain” every 2 minutes or so, – Neo Futurists know how to keep their public awake. Rubin museum

I liked “Moral Tales from Kshemendra’s Collection”. Actually, I’m amazed by all “story paintings”: while usual paintings show just one scene, those show us the whole story.

Anyway, this particular picture appealed to me because it had 3 stories within it while it wasn’t overfilled with the details. It looks even empty.

The first story tells about king Madhata, who hadn’t enjoyed giving in his previous life as a merchant, and so was punished by loosing everything.

The second story tells about king Chandraprabha, who was so selfless and generous that he gave away even his head.

The third story tells about seafarer, who gave all his jewels to the robbers to save merchants’ lives. The goddess then appeared to him saying where he could get a germ that will help him to fulfill everyone’s wishes. When a king died the seafarer was called by a wise man to become a new king. After a while, the seafarer used his germs and all people got their wishes fulfilled.

All three stories are united by the motive of selflessness, showing how people who care about others and, what’s more, enjoy these acts, they will be rewarded. But if you’re not – you’ll be punished for this.

Love this place. There is something about it –  can’t tell. And it’s not the food. It may be where the Daikon is located – Pyatnickaya is one of favourite places, huh? But somehow it’s not that simple. The simplicity had been trying to live by didn’t work out. A rock is never just a rock; – really?

It’s the best part. If never had long hair – won’t understand this lightness: hair’s said to hold all the memoriesor just the past. Don’t really know. But it helps to get rid of everything from before. If it’s otherwise – there is no point in shaving all the time or after merried. That’s the story. The looks? Oh yeah, that’s also.

About seas and kilometers

That doesn’t count as exhibition, or does it?

In fact, it is just a part of collection occupying only one wall, and one would generally pass it by – not this time. Actually, I was to pass by when got the sense I’m walking along the sea – that was it.

Jan Dibbet’s  “Dutch mountain – Big Sea” is a panoramic photo of a seashore. The work right next to it is “10 km 1:5000”  by Stanley Brouwn –  10 km line drown 1 cm per 5000 meters.

While they are independent works spearing one wall, the wall reinforces  the merger between these two. It may be seen as a movement project: one’s not in the museum when going by, and what a great opportunity to “run” 10 km in a second (use your eyes)!

Visiting won’t take long, MoMA’s waiting!

Tumor

It might even be a bit depressing – cant’s say if it’s paintings or the story. But big bright white room of Brooklyn museum such thoughts go away those of strokes of paintbrush and technique are getting their welcome.

Eva Hesse’s works are simplistic oil paintings but they makes one peer into each one even more than into a detailed one.. Looking at these works one sees the world as if through some strange spectre – Eva Hesse’s specter.

Eva Hesse Spectres 1960 is put together long after the artist’s death. Which might have been reflected in a not-so-optimistic tone of it: Hesse died in her 34th year from the brain tumor. One can’t skip the question in which way could it have affected her work. Want to find out about it? The exhibition is held till January 8, 2012. Seriously, don’t miss it.

Review number.

As a New Yorker, you have probably been there at least couple of times. The museum is interactive (and actually art in itself), and there are always seem to be the same exhibitions, but they are not, they just can’t be. The museum is mostly free, and many different events are held there everyday. But I will review only one of these. Continue reading

“Sum of days” (August 24–November 14, 2011)

Have you spent even one day behind the piles of textbooks in the library? So you’ve gained something (hope much), but missed other stuff. To make up for it, you can go to the “Sum of Days” at the MoMA.

If you hear voices at arrival without seeing any people (which is highly unlikely, buuut) – that’s all right. That’s actually what it all about. Later you’ll see microphones, as well as loudspeakers, hanging all around the room. These record what you’ve missed not being there and then play it back. However, as it happens to events of the past, the recording is being done over these of previous days. To mention, there are musical performances  being held from time to time (oh, those memorable times!) So if you are to visit – you are to visit in time of one of these to add to your experience at the installation. Aaaand, don’t forget to say something and become a part of the Art.

What is it so artful I’ve noticed about New York? New York.

Just look at these buildings, organisation of streets, the map of the city, and how do people match it without even knowing it You can always get a glimpse of “the soul” of the city walking around the streets, just shut up for a while and look around, or, you will bump into something.
