Our topic is centered around acidic rain in NYC. We wanted to explore why acid rain specifically affects NYC? Acidic rain corrodes metal quicker and negatively affects the soil of NYC. In upstate New York especially in the Adirondack mountains, acid rain has diminished the population of marine species in the lakes. Sulfur dioxide released from the industrial power plants in the midwest gets blown to the northeast and gets deposited through snow, rain, and fog. Increasing acidity in Lake Minnewaska, in upstate New York, caused the fish in the lake to disappear for hundred years since the beginning of industrialization in the U.S. Acidic rain causes stone buildings to corrode more easily thus, repairs have to be made frequently. Moreover, acidic rain takes away the nutrients required for plants to sustain themselves. The acidic rain pushes the much needed nutrients farther down into the soil making it hard for plants to absorb nutrients from their roots.
