This art piece was inspired by “The Trayvon Generation” by Elizabeth Alexander, where she describes the last 25 years as the period where all people were exposed to stories of racial discrimination and police brutality. She describes her perspective as a mother raising her children in this generation where kids are exposed to death constantly. Alexander powerfully describes her maternal concerns in a world that can take her loved ones away from her in a heartbeat. Alexander’s explanation made me think of the worries of my mother for my own safety.

A poem from an unknown author:

Right from the moment of our birth
All we are is an angel on earth
We are born to live, To learn to roam
And when the times right we fly back home
